However most households who keep their bags know that the plastic pile grows out of control!
Here are my top 3 tips for dealing with that plastic bag pile;
1. REFUSE
Use environmentally friendly re-usable bags or totes when shopping or taking items places. If you stop the bags coming in, then you wont have them piling up.
But then if you don't have them coming in you miss out on free bin liners you say?
Well consider aiming to use re-usable bags anyway, how many of us know that we forget out bags at times or when we go to smaller shops at the mall or even kmart ? We didn't think to bring a tote so end up with plastic bags anyway.
I think you will find a half dozen bags enough to keep you going until the next lot slip through.
2. FOLD THEM
So you want to keep a couple of bags handy, perhaps in a child's school bag or even your nappy bag?
Here is a quick picture tutorial of how to fold a plastic shopping bag to store neatly - just like my mother taught me - keep them this way in bags or even a basket in a kitchen.
3. STUFF THEM
If your husband and kids are like mine, they are unlikely to bother with folding shopping bags! (or maybe even you thought "Ain't nobody got time for that!") Well, turn an old hot chocolate or formula container into a plastic bag dispenser.
I personally have used a small container, it can fit aprox 8 plastic bags into it, Plenty for our family. I am trying to change our "store up hundreds of plastic bags" mentality so we can more easily transition to a plastic bag free home.
To make my plastic bag dispenser I simply covered over the label of the container with paper and cut a hole in the top - and stuffed it with 8 plastic bags. Yep easy and husband friendly.
How do you store your plastic bags?
And if your house is plastic bag free, how do you deal with bin liners, soiled clothes and wet swimmers? I feel like those plastic bags are still just too handy - would love to hear how you do it!
